Mr. Xu Kuangdi's visit to the museum

Mr. Xu Kuangdi, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, former Mayor of Shanghai, former Dean of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice Chairman of the 10th CPPCC, accompanied by Mr. Yan Jianping, Director of Hongkou District People’s Congress Standing Committee, visited the museumon the morning of October 4th,2012.
After hearing the report presented by curator Mr.Chen Jian, Mr. Xu Kuangdi said that the history of European Jews taking refuge in Shanghai during WWII fully reflects the tolerance and kindness of Chinese people. The spreading of this story plays an active role in promoting the understanding and friendship between the Chinese and people from all over the world. During the visit, Mr. Xu Kuangdi also shared his profound knowledge on the communication and special relationships between the city of Shanghai and the Jewish nation. He encouraged the staff to work hard to help the museum play a more important role.
During the meeting with the staff, Mr. Xu required them to take advantage of this final opportunity to collect historical materials from former Jewish refugees in Shanghai and enrich collections and exhibits so that the museum can be more vivid and leaves deeper impressions onits visitors. The museum should fullyunfold the refugees’ life in Shanghai by exhibiting more materials about how they established schools, took part in social lives and interacted with their Chinese neighbors.
Moreover, Mr. Xu also suggested that the museum should strive to get more attendance and support frombroader society, such as social groups, enterprises, foreign Jewish communities and individuals.Through establishing a foundationand gaining support from foreign funds, the museum may have further developments. It also conforms to the operations of similar foreign museums.
When Mr. Xu was informed that the staff and guides are consisted primarily of studentvolunteers from famous universities in Shanghai. He was very pleased, and invited them to share their working experience and difficulties. Mr. Xu talked about his own experience and taught the students how to tackle the difficulties they encountered in their guidance. Talking about diversifying groups of volunteers, Mr. Xu took the example of a retired provincial governor whowentfor voluntary work and suggested that museum invite government officials and celebrities to work as volunteers, which would enhance the influence andappeal of the museum.Mr. Xu stated thathehimself would love to be a volunteer in the museumif there is an opportunity in the future.
