At the invitation of Mr. Shulman, President of the Association of Holocaust Organizations (AHO), Curator Chen Jian attended the 2011 Winter Seminar of AHO at the Shoah Memorial, Paris from Jan. 9 to Jan. 12.

Historians and Experts from France, USA, Germany, Israel, Austria, Belgium and Lithuania have given presentations or introduced the related projects at the seminar. The themes of the presentations are as follow: A Critical Analysis of the Memorialization of the Holocaust, Current Trends in Holocaust Education at Memorials, New Memorial Projects in Europe, Current Trends in Holocaust Scholarship, Current Trends in Anti-Semitism, The Promotion of Holocaust Education through International Organizations: Debates, Obstacles and Progresses, Etc.

This seminar has also got support from the Paris Municipal Government and the French Ministry of Defense. Ms. Catherine Vieu-Charier, Deputy Mayor of the Paris Municipal Government, in Charge of Memory issues, has attended the reception at the City Hall of Paris on Jan. 10 and delivered a speech.

Ms. Catherine Vieu-Charier said, seventy years after the events, two generations have seen those who were the players, witnesses and victims progressively disappear. A historic milestone is behind us and we now have to face an essential question: how can we make sure the new generations are aware of this disaster that is moving away with the passing of time and becomes remote to us. Our task remains complex, difficult. We must not distort the truth but we mustn’t either confront children with a totally negative vision of barbarity. Thanks to the people of France, 85% of Jewish children escaped deportation. Now, in Paris, Plates recalling the names of all the children who were rounded up and murdered by the Nazis with the shameful complicity of the Vichy government have been placed in every school. Catherine emphasized in her speech that, “Our determination to fight all forms of racism and anti-semitism is absolute. Our policy is to remain vigilant and all the associations that fight the same battle are our friends. Your international association is one of them and your work is both very important and very relevant.”
