SJRM Representatives Attending the 22nd General Conference & 25th General Assembly of ICOM

  The 22nd General Conference & 25th General Assembly of the International Council of Museums kicks off on November 7th, 2010 in the EXPO Center. Mr. Chen Jian, Curator of Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum (SJRM) was invited to attend and also make a speech titled Devotion to the Spread of the Idea of a Harmonious World on Nov. 9th at the Conference of International Committee of Memorial Museums in Remembrance of the Victims of Public Crimes (ICMEMO).

  ICOM was established in November 1946. It is the international organization of museums and museum professionals. The 28,000 members of ICOM in 137 countries participate in the national, regional and international activities of the organization: workshops, publications, training, twinning programs, and the promotion of museums through International Museum Day (May 18, annually). The membership participates in the activities of 115 National Committees and 31 International Committees. Some National Committees have also organized on a regional level to reinforce their action. ICOM is affiliated with 17 international associations. The General Conference of ICOM is scheduled to be held once every three years.

  In 1983, approved by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic China, the Chinese Museum Association joined ICOM and the Chinese National Committee of ICOM was created in the same year. In 2007, at the 21st General Conference of ICOM in Vienna, Shanghai was designated as the host city of the 22nd General Conference of ICOM in 2010.

  The theme of the 22nd Conference is Museums for Social Harmony. Six famous trans-disciplinary speakers have given keynote addresses.

  During the six-day meeting, more than 3,600 museum curators, Cultural heritage experts and the scholars gather in Shanghai to share with each other their insights and views on the museums’ role in promoting the harmonious development of the society.

  The theme for ICMEMO Conference is the History of the Jewish Immigrants and the Jewish Quarter in Shanghai and Museums’ Role in Preserving History and building a Harmonious Society. There are 11 speeches. The speakers include 6 Curators and scholars from China and 5 foreign Curators and experts.

  

  Dr. Vojtech Blodig, Chairman of ICMEMO

  On November 10th, sixteen ICOM delegates make a visit to Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, including Dr. Vojtech Blodig, Chairman of ICMEMO, Professor Albert Lichtblau from Salzburg University, Ms. Susan Faine, Collections Curator of Jewish Museum of Australia, Professor Julie Higashi from Ritsumeikan University, Ms. Jdit Sharoni, Curator of the Babylonian Jewry Museum, Ms. Galia Gavish, Artistic Director of The Issac Kaplan Old Yishuv Court Museum, Ms. Lori E. Waters from the Museum of Texas Tech University, etc. After the visit, they exchanged views and suggestions with Curator Chen Jian. They also hope to make further exchanges and conduct cooperation with SJRM in the future.(By Amy Liao)
