On June 6, 2008, Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum held the first large-scale event since it was open again to the public. At 10 am, the opening ceremony of “China-Israel Friendship” Pictures Exhibition, which is also the “Jews in Shanghai” Database Startup Ceremony, started. This event was co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel in Shanghai and the People’s Government of Hongkou District to honor the sixtieth national anniversary of Israel. The pictures exhibition was intended to commemorate the friendship between the two countries and their people, and display the tremendous achievements in their exchanges of science and technology, agriculture and culture.

The “Jews in Shanghai” database, which was sponsored by Israeli enterprises, aims at collecting and collating info data about nearly 30,000 Jews who fled to Shanghai for shelter in the 1930s and the 1940s. Over 120 distinguished guests attended this ceremony, including Li Mingjun, director general of Foreign Affairs Office of the Municipal Government of Shanghai, Yu Beihua, mayor of Hongkou District, consulates general in Shanghai of the USA, Germany and Australia, representatives of donating businesses, leaders of the Jewish community in Shanghai, a couple of Jewish refugees living in Shanghai during WWII, and Dr Feng Shan Ho’s daughter, Manli Ho. Before the ceremony, all attendees paid silent tribute to Wenchuan earthquake victims. After speeches delivered successively by Uri Gutmann, Consul General of Israel in Shanghai, Yu Beihua, Mayor of Hongkou District, and Man Lai Ho, the Ribbon Cutting ceremony commenced.
