Musical Drama North bank Suzhou Creek makes Debut at the Museum

On the evening of March 22nd, the musical drama North bank Suzhou Creek makes a successful debut at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. Consul Generals from Israel, America, Germany, Hungary and Poland as well as a famous Chinese writer , Ms. Wang Anyi have also come and watched the show. Written by vice president of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Dr William Sun, and staged in the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue,?the stories are interwoven with the music of old Shanghai, 1930s Hollywood and the Klezmer tradition.
As the producer, Curator Chen Jian delivered a brief speech before the premiere. He said that the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum has always been trying various kinds of ways to present the history of the Jewish refugees in Shanghai as well as the friendship between the local Chinese people and the Jewish people. The musical drama North bank Suzhou Creek offers us a new way and a new perspective to understand the history. Curator Chen Jian expressed thanks to Vice President Sun and his team for their hard work. He has also specially thanked the Israeli Consulate General in Shanghai and JDC for their firm support in his speech.
That night, the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue was turned into the main stage of the musical play, a Jewish-owned café in the 1930s. The audience was seated right in the play, together with the actors, listening to the music and following closely to the show. After the performance, the actors bowed again and again to the excited audience and their applause.
There are two rounds of performances. The first round is from March 22nd to 25th and from March 29th to April 1st at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum at 19:30 in the evening; the second round will be on April 10th and 11th at Blackbox Theatre of the Shanghai Theatre Academy at 19:30 in the evening.
